Finding Melody: A Review of The Little Mermaid II

The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea is a 2000 animated musical film and the direct-to-video sequel to the 1989 classic, The Little Mermaid. Directed by Jim Kammerud and Brian Smith, the movie features the wonderful adventures of Ariel and Prince Eric’s daughter, Melody.

The story begins with Ariel and Eric’s peaceful life, who have just welcomed their newborn daughter, Melody. Ariel’s father, King Triton, is still haunted by the sorrow of his past, where he had lost his wife because of humans.

Knowing the dangers of the human world, Triton has a wall built around his palace, separating their kingdom from the outside world. However, Melody grows up to be a curious and adventurous young girl, always longing to venture beyond the walls to explore the world.

She discovers a locket, and on opening it, she realizes that it has a picture of a beautiful mermaid who turns out to be her mother, Ariel. The little girl soon learns about her family’s history and her mermaid roots.

Meanwhile, Ursula’s sister, Morgana, who wants revenge on Ariel and Triton, lures Melody into the sea and promises her that she can become a mermaid. Morgana tricks Melody into getting Triton’s trident, which is believed to hold immense power.

In an attempt to impress her grandfather, Melody unwittingly gives the trident to Morgana, and in return becomes a mermaid in hopes of fulfilling her dream of exploring the ocean. Ariel and Eric are devastated by Melody’s decision and are forced to seek Triton’s help to locate their daughter.

The search leads to some very risky battles, both above and under the water, because Melody is the only one who can wield Triton’s trident. The family is reunited, and Melody comes face-to-face with Morgana once again.

The film highlights the importance of family bonds, bravery, courage, and inner strength. The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea is a delightful movie that combines beautiful visuals with excellent music, and relatable characters.
